It is with great sadness to report the passing of ex-player, committee member and long term sponsor of the club, Michael Hix.
Michael’s association with Sleaford Cricket Club starting as a young boy, often scoring for the senior teams.
Michael would be the first to admit that he did not possess huge amounts of natural ability for the sport of cricket, but in typically determined style he made himself into a more than useful second team bowler. He had the ability to swing the ball prodigiously, leading to several successful seasons with the second eleven.
With the bat, he was able both to defend stoically and to hit the ball hard when necessary. One memory, probably from the eighties, was of Michael hitting a very quick fifty at Collingham, much to the delight of his teammates.
When Newark Alliance cricket came along in the early nineties, Michael threw himself into the challenge. He very much enjoyed those Sunday afternoons and often spoke about them with fondness in later years.
Undoubtedly Michael’s biggest contribution to Sleaford cricket came when he and Gavin Hutson decided to form a third eleven, with the intention of developing youngsters. Shaun Morris and Luke Hollingworth, among many others, were the beneficiaries of that successful project.
Michael’s son, George (now sixteen), is making his own way as a cricketer, regularly playing for the second eleven and representing Lincolnshire at County Age Group level.
Michael served on the Club committee for many years. During this time he was responsible for organising splendid hog roasts and overseeing the very successful firework displays. He has sponsored the Club for many years.
Everyone at Sleaford Cricket Club would like to pass on their thoughts and deepest condolences to the Hix family.
