John Haslam was born 27th 1941 in Bury, Lancashire, he married Audrey in March 1965 & John & Audrey moved to Greenmount, a village just outside Bury. Their first daughter, Elaine, was born November 1966 & their second daughter Joanne (Jo) was born in
March 1970. Just before this John and Audrey moved into a larger bungalow on Brandlesholme Road opposite Greenmount Cricket club.
John & Audrey were active social members at Greenmount CC from the late 60’s until 2004 when they moved to Lincolnshire & whilst John never played cricket he served on the committee at Greenmount for several years holding various different positions.
Their bungalow on Brandlesholme was a perfect vantage point to watch cricket when the English weather wasn’t so friendly & Elaine has many memories of walking around the boundary with her Dad & various Greenmount supporters discussing the match
situation!
John loved his sport, he followed Bolton Wanderers Football club, Bury Football Club, became season ticket holders at his beloved Wigan rugby League, followed village, county and national cricket. If sport was on, he would watch it.
John retired in 2004 and he and Audrey downsized, selling up in Greenmount, and moving to Sleaford. John’s love of cricket continued & he became heavily involved at Sleaford Cricket club being secretary in 2005 until 2007 & then took over as chairman
until the end of 2009. He loved being close to his grandchildren and loved going to watch Ben play rugby especially when Sleaford started up a rugby league side, and Jemma in her gymnastics. There were lots of days spent watching Cricket at Sleaford & following Lincolnshire CC around the county & trips further afield in the Minor Counties Championship. He also was involved in the organisation of the annual Golf day for a few years. He was a sports spectator but did take up bowling and dominoes in his
retirement.
John started with memory issues approximately 13 years ago and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia in 2019. He moved permanently into Roxholm Care Home in May 2021 after a few earlier respite stays. John and Audrey celebrated their diamond Wedding Anniversary 6th March 2025 and Elaine and Audrey visited John with Champagne and Cake and a card from the King.
Sadly on 10th May 2026 John had a fall in Roxholm and suffered a hip fracture & subsequently was hospitalised for 6 weeks and then discharged to Martin Hall Nursing Home where he died peacefully 4th July 2026
Funeral will take place at Lincoln Crematorium on Thursday 6th August at 1:30pm followed by the wake at Sleaford Cricket Club
