It was a weekend to savour for Sleaford Cricket Club, with both the 1st XI and Sunday 1st XI claiming excellent victories and collecting maximum points in the process.

The 1st XI travelled to Grimsby Town on Saturday and came away with a hard-earned 42-run win, before the Sunday 1st XI followed it up at home with a commanding 106-run success over Bracebridge Heath. Two games, two wins, and plenty for the club to be proud of.

Woods leads 1st XI to vital win at Grimsby

Saturday’s trip to Augusta Street was not straightforward. After being asked to bat first, Sleaford made a positive start but soon found themselves in trouble at 66 for four. When the score later slipped to 175 for eight, the innings looked in danger of falling short of a truly competitive total.

George Woods had other ideas. Producing a superb unbeaten 142 from 107 balls, with 21 fours, he carried the innings almost single-handedly at times and gave Sleaford a total to defend. His hundred came from just 81 deliveries, and his ability to keep scoring while wickets fell around him proved decisive.

There was important support too, particularly from the lower order. Teenagers Olly Sneath and Harry Bailey showed great maturity at numbers ten and eleven, occupying 35 balls between them and helping Woods add valuable late runs through partnerships of 46 and 36. Those contributions helped Sleaford reach 257 all out from 46.4 overs.

Grimsby’s reply began badly as Sleaford struck early and often, reducing the hosts to 46 for six. Matthew Mills was outstanding with the ball, taking four for 32 from his 10 overs, including three maidens. Kieran Harbron added three for 38 and Drew Harbron claimed two for 50 as Sleaford kept control of the chase.

Grimsby did not go quietly. Quadrat Qadiri made 71 and Muhammad Ayub added 56, with partnerships of 55 and 87 briefly giving the home side hope. But Sleaford held their nerve, and Woods fittingly took the final wicket as Grimsby were bowled out for 215. It completed a fine 42-run win and a huge all-round performance from Sleaford’s match-winner.

Sunday side see off league leaders Bracebridge Heath

On Sunday, Sleaford produced another excellent performance, this time at home to Bracebridge Heath in the Lincoln & District League Premier Division. Having won the toss and chosen to bat, Sleaford posted an imposing 250 for four from their 40 overs.

The innings was built around a brilliant fourth-wicket partnership between Harry Bailey and Sean Solia. After a strong start was checked by three quick wickets with the score on 60, Bailey and Solia rebuilt superbly before taking the game away from the visitors.

Solia led the charge with an unbeaten 104 from 68 balls, striking 10 fours and six sixes, while Bailey made an excellent 61 from 85 balls. Their stand of 171 turned a potentially tricky position into a commanding one and gave Sleaford complete control of the match.

Bracebridge Heath’s reply never truly gathered the momentum required. They reached 47 for one but then slipped to 60 for five as Sleaford’s bowlers took charge. Joe Lovel offered resistance with 47 from 34 balls, but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.

The wickets were shared across the attack, with Micah Young, Max Lorimer and Andy Hibberd each taking two. Mackenzie Ross, Caleb Hutton and Oscar Lond also played their part as Bracebridge Heath were dismissed for 144 in 27.4 overs, giving Sleaford a convincing 106-run win over the league leaders.

A weekend full of positives

The results also carry real significance in the league tables. The 1st XI remain third in the Lincolnshire Premier Cricket League Premier Division, firmly in touch with Scunthorpe Town and Bourne at the top, while the Sunday 1st XI strengthened their position in the Lincoln & District League Premier Division with an impressive win against the side sitting first.

From Woods’ superb century at Grimsby to Solia’s unbeaten hundred at home, from lower-order resilience to shared wickets across both attacks, it was a weekend that showed the quality and character running through Sleaford Cricket Club.
