Just the two games over the weekend, with the 1st XI putting their feet up on their “Bye” week. The 2nd XI hosted Market Deeping in a largely one-sided affair at London Road. Electing to bat, Deeping made slow progress in the face of some excellent bowling from the Sleaford attack. Goddard continues to defy Father Time returning figures of 9-2-15-3. Godby also claimed 3 wickets with 2 for Chessum and 1 for Lambert as the innings closed on a below par 130/9. In reply, Godby was dismissed in the first over to an excellent delivery, but the innings was dominated by a free-flowing Rhys Collings who stroked his way to 85 from just 57 balls including a number of eye catching cover drives for four. Ably supported by Ollie Bean, who remained not out on 22, the chase was completed in 23.1 overs for the loss of 4 wickets.

The Sunday 2nd XI hosted Heckington. Winning the toss and electing to bat they posted 173/9 from their 40 overs, largely thanks to a last wicket partnership of 30 from Chessum and Pickwell. Patel top scored with 33. With the ball 2 wickets fell cheaply, but no.4 batter Townsend kept the visitors in the hunt, making 80. Regular wickets fell with Chessum and George Tanner claiming 3 victims with a brace for skipper Glendinning. Down to the last over with Heckington requiring 9 to win but with only 1 wicket in hand and Aayush Patel bowling. A single from the first ball, brought the injured no.11 on strike. A dot ball followed and the 3rd ball missed everything and went for 4 byes. In the meantime the striker looked like he’d been shot by a lone sniper from the book depository as he collapsed in a heap. After some delay a runner was brought into the mix (perhaps not allowed under the laws?). A scrambled single followed, leaving Heckington requiring 3 to win from 2 deliveries. 5th ball and the batters get through for 2 runs aided by a fumble in the outfield and the scores are level. What followed was controversial but to the letter of the law correct. The runner on completing the 2nd run inexplicably came out of his ground thinking the game had been won. Sleaford duly took the bails off and he was given run out after some discussion. That left the game tied in a slightly unsatisfactory fashion. Should Sleaford have rescinded the appeal in the spirit of the game, think Bairstow in the 2nd Ashes test? Maybe. Would Heckington have done the same in similar circumstances? Probably!
