Woodhall Spa were the visitors to London Road on Saturday as the 2nd half of the Lincs ECB Premier League kicked off in damp fashion. Heavy rain delayed the start and skipper Shorthouse was relieved to win the toss and invite Woodhall to bat. Already reduced to 42 overs per innings from the start, further rain delays through the innings meant both innings reduced further to 34 overs apiece. In between breaks for rain , the opening bowlers bowled tidily in keeping the rate in check, before Tite dismissed Jayawardene. Drew Harbron entered proceedings and produced his most productive spell for a few weeks picking up 3/19 in his 7 overs. The introduction of Shorthouse brought a late flurry of wickets and he ended with an impressive 5/21 to end Woodhall’s innings off the final ball at 142. With the bat Conor and Ayush both started positively in pursuit of the target before Conor fell for a quick scoring 26 with the score on 41. The introduction of Notts player Carter changed the complexion of the match picking up 3 for 14 including the big scalp of Cooper. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals with small partnerships developing. The ‘WinViz’ calculation was changing on a ball by ball basis and with Hall being 9th out to the first ball of the last over with 3 runs required, all results were still very much possible. Peck had other ideas, calmly stroking a couple of singles in partnership with Tite as the required runs were knocked off with a ball to spare. These boys don’t like doing things the easy way, but they certainly keep the crowd on the edge of their seats.

There was no match for the Saturday 2nd XI this week, but the Women’s XI were in T20 action at Woodhall. Opting to bowl the Sleaford team restricted Woodhall to 117, bowled out in 19.2 overs. 4 wickets for Millie Townend with 2 each for Holly Vaughan, Evie Jarvis and Olivia Cepelak. Were it not for a rapid 50 from Sophie Smith, the away team would have been chasing a very low total as no other batter reached double figures. Olivia provided the impetus in the run chase with a near run-a-ball 43 and although she found good support in Millie Townend (24) and Chloe Mulhall (17) the innings ended on 109/7, a defeat by just 8 runs.
On Sunday, the 1st XI visited Ancaster and the game was over and done with in rapid fashion as Sleaford bowled them out for just 65, Drew picking up 6 wickets with a bowling stick contender performance. Fan favourite, Conor Harbron was clearly in a rush as his 47 not out saw the runs knocked off in just 8 overs, albeit for the loss of 3 wickets including Charlie Roberts, adjudged LBW and despite his protestations, was informed by all present it was the plumbest of plumb LBWs that was missing off, missing leg, but hitting middle halfway up.
The Sunday 2’s faced Nettleham “Academy” that included Haydn Bromfield who had scored 67 on the same ground a week before against our 1st XI. Sadly, he was dropped on 1 by aging former club legend Bryan Smith and proceeded to book in for 115 out of a total of 201, with no other player passing 30. The bowling innings got off to a poor start with both Glendinning and Phillips proving expensive with the first 6 overs going for 54. Experience was required and Shorthouse and Smith entered the fray who got the scoring under control and back to under 5 an over at the halfway point, albeit with no wickets taken. Smith tired dramatically in his last few overs offering up a few boundary opportunities, with Shorthouse only going for 27 in his 10 overs. Tanner and Sneath took up the reins as the veterans completed their spells dropping the combined age of the bowlers by around 80 years. The opening partnership was soon after broken via a direct hit run-out from Glendinning Sr and Tanner used his inswing to good effect with 3 wickets of his own including the destructive Bromfield. 201/5 was a decent effort after the start, but Sleaford would have to bat well. To an extent they did, but wickets fell with great regularity either side of a lengthy rain break. Henderson top scored with 37 with Broom and Shorthouse both getting into the 20’s. 3 wickets with the score on 118 ended any faint hopes and the innings closed on 127.
