The Saturday 1st XI travelled to Grimsby in the hope of bouncing back after the chastening defeat of the previous weekend. This time out the team were missing several of the regulars who were unavailable for a variety of reasons but still took a side capable of posting a decent total having won the toss and electing to bat. Unfortunately, this was not to be the case as Sleaford could only muster a well below par total of 185/9 in their 50 overs on a slow pitch with batters finding it hard to time the ball. Conor Harbron deserves credit for sticking it out in trying circumstances for his 45 matched by captain Shorthouse, but there were no more contributions of note other than a quick fire 25 not out from Kieran coming in at number 10 who made the total semi-respectable. Grimsby lost both openers relatively cheaply with Tite and Drew picking up a wicket apiece but in reality our hosts reached the total with few alarms with only Shorthouse able to control the strike rate claiming 2/30 in his 10 overs. Grimsby’s Buirman included some lusty blows in his run a ball 61. A crushing loss by 6 wickets with 14 overs remaining is a frustrating return and we hope for better availability and a return to batting form as we host Scunthorpe next Saturday.
Sleaford 2nd XI hosted Boston CC who after winning the toss chose to bat first. Goddard and Chessum shared the new ball and both claimed an early wicket with Boston falling to 14 for 2, but a number of hefty partnerships followed thereafter as a careless fielding display cost Sleaford dearly. However, a late burst of wickets kept the score in check with Boston setting 230/6 in their 45 overs. Goddard with another miserly display of 2/27 with support from Dylan who claimed 3 victims but at a rather more expensive cost of 68 runs from his 9 overs. With the bat openers Hutson and Godby started positively before Hutson fell for 14. Godby was settling into his job and looking to bat long, mixing organised defence with measured aggression. He found allies in Oli Bean (23) and latterly Jake Henderson making a well crafted 31 not out in support of an excellent Godby century and Sleaford ran out winners by 5 wickets with an over spare. Eighteen well earnt points. Sleaford consolidated their position of third in the SLB Championship and travel to league leaders Long Sutton next weekend.
On Sunday the 1st XI was on show at Caythorpe who asked Sleaford to bat first. An opening partnership of 134 between Aayush Patel (67) and Conor Harbron followed. Conor found able support from younger brother Drew (50) as he went on to score his maiden hundred of the season. Charlie Roberts added 33 of his own as Sleaford run up a large total of 288/7 in 40 overs. This proved far too many for Caythorpe who were shot out for just 78 in 24 overs. Ben Glendinning with 4 wickets and Max Lorimer 3, allowing Sleaford to romp home by a mammoth 210 runs.
The final matches of the weekend saw the Sleaford Women’s Super 8’s host Caythorpe Notts and Kirkby Portland. In their first match against an experienced Caythorpe team Sleaford managed to score 89 runs in their 16 overs, but 7 dismissals saw a net score of only 254 posted. Tamsin Henry made 32 from 16 deliveries and Olivia Cepelak 19 from 14. The Caythorpe batters were far more destructive striking 142 in their innings with only 3 dismissals giving them a net score of 327 and victory by 73 runs. A wicket each for Olivia, Daisy Schofield and Isabel Creasey. The other fixture against Kirkby Portland was far more even. Asked to bat first again, Sleaford reached 104 and crucially for the loss of only 2 wickets given them a net score of 294, Olivia top scoring with 16. Kirkby made 113 in their innings, 9 more runs than Sleaford, but for the loss of 5 wickets given them a net of 288 and Sleaford prevailing by just 6 runs. 2 wickets for Tamsin Henry and 1 each for Olivia, Mel Jarvis and Ellie Baxter-Hill. Olivia again deserves special praise for her fielding display including a stunning diving catch in the deep.
