A good weekend for the senior men’s teams with 3 wins from 3. The Saturday 1st XI entertained Spalding. Asked to bat 1st the Sleaford batters set about the Spalding bowling. Aayush Patel scoring a fine 102 and alongside Hibberd (61) set a platform for Smith and Shorthouse to press the accelerator in an unbroken partnership of 122 in the final 9 overs of the innings. Smith finishing on 88 from 49 with the skipper bludgeoning 52 from just 23 balls faced. This was always likely to be far too many for Spalding, and so it proved as they finished on 186/9 with Sleaford unable to capture the final wicket for the extra bowling point. A win by 167 runs with 4 wickets for Drew Harbron, 2 each for Shorthouse and Kieran and 1 for Tite. A good result, setting them up nicely for the trip to reigning champions Lindum next Saturday.
The 2nd XI travelled to Freiston and on losing the toss were asked to field on what was described as a sporty wicket. Makwana in a fine all-round display capturing 5/21, ably supported by Nel with 2 and a wicket apiece for Hall, Sneath and Goddard. All out for 102, but Freiston did manage to put on a last wicket partnership of 44, to give their bowlers something to work with. Makwana was the backbone of the chase with 35 and Sleaford will be thankful to the patience of the umpires as they hung around for 2.5 hours watching it rain. When they eventually did get back on the pitch ‘cool head’ Roberts with 18 not out alongside Hutson picked off the required runs for the loss of 5 wickets.
Onto Sunday and the 2’s took on Owmby at London Road. Batting 1st Sleaford posted a respectable 194/9 in their 40 overs. Godby top scoring with 45, well supported by Ben Glendinning with 42*. Returning fan favourite Dylan Chessum took the only 2 wickets to fall as the heavens opened and the game was abandoned with Owmby at 68/2 and the match in the balance.
Unfortunately, the Women’s 2024 bad luck continues as both super 8 matches were abandoned without the team travelling.
On Monday, the club hosted the Winkworth Cup T20 finals day, that saw Woodhall Spa topple Grantham in the final to take the cup. Many thanks to all volunteers who helped the day run smoothly and special note to the Sunday 2nd XI for cleaning the changing rooms after their fixture ended and making the clubhouse look respectable for our visitors.
U15’s report from Phil Sneath
