Weekend Results 10th and 11th June
WHAT A GAME!!! Sleaford 1st XI on the back of consecutive defeats in the Premier League entertained Scunthorpe and a sizeable crowd of supporters on Saturday. Stand in skipper Drew Harbron inevitably got the first part wrong and lost the toss on a belter of a pitch on a balmy day and with several absentees from the first choice XI could sense the next few hours would be a hard slog. Scunthorpe duly delivered albeit with the loss of an early wicket from debutant 15 year old Dylan Chessum but that was followed by a 201 run partnership in relatively quick time. Mason Mansfield was brought on to bowl his developing off-spin and captured the key 2nd wicket and soon after added another in his inexpensive spell of 2/25 to stem the flow. Unfortunately, he received little support on the bowling front with the rest of the 7 man attack going at more than a run a ball as Scunthorpe racked up 335/6 in their allotted overs. A daunting total but some observers believed this to be 30-40 runs short of what they could have attained. In spite of that all eyes were on Kiwi import Henry Cooper to go big and provide the backbone of the run chase. And so it proved to be in an outstanding innings of 108 who alongside Andy Hibberd with his superb 61 put on 119 for the 3rd wicket, but when Cooper departed there were still 80 runs needed and only 44 deliveries remaining. The tail needed to wag and wag it did! Charlie Roberts and the Harbron brothers Drew and Kieran added quick runs to keep the run rate at a manageable level but as Kieran was dismissed young Chessum was tasked with facing a couple of deliveries in support of the Hulk like Cameron Hall. To the last over, 11 runs needed, 9 wickets down with Hall on strike. What followed will live long in many a Sleaford supporters memory as the first ball of the over sailed over square leg for 6 and without a thought of using the remaining deliveries Cameron repeated the effort by depositing the bowler over the pavilion to claim an astonishing victory by 1 wicket with 4 balls to spare. Hall finished on 42 not out from just 16 deliveries.

WHAT A GAME PART DEUX!! The 2nd XI travelled to league leaders Long Sutton and having won the toss elected to field. Long Sutton got off to a flyer and at 186/3 were looking at a total of well in excess of 250 until the introduction of Max Lorimer turned the tide. His 6/47 alongside a brace of wickets for Goddard and Puri restricted our hosts to 211 all out in 32.1 overs giving Sleaford an extra 12 overs to complete the run chase. In reply, Sleaford got off to a steady start before losing opener Godby (10) in the 7th over with the score on 21. Captain Hutson then followed the very next over being clean bowled. Small partnerships started to develop but Sleaford still lost wickets at regular intervals and when Bean (20) was run out after a mix up and Glendinning (14) being dismissed LBW the situation did not look great with the score on 75-5 after 23 overs. The loss of Glendinning brought Stephan (69) to the crease who looked to put some pressure back onto the bowlers, regularly hitting boundaries and putting the bad balls away. A 45 run partnership then followed before Stephan was dismissed leaving Sleaford on 178 with work still to be done. Goddard (6) joined Puri (30*) at the crease and put together a very useful 28 run partnership to leave Sleaford needing 6 runs to win with 1 wicket remaining. Lorimer joined Puri at the crease and the very next over Puri pulled away a short ball for four to give Sleaford victory. The 2’s sit second in the table behind Long Sutton who suffered their first defeat of the season.
Onto the relative calm of Sunday with the 2nd XI off to Horncastle. The batting performance was exactly what we had been looking for as a team and it was led from the front with a 161 partnership from our openers. Ian Glendinning going on to complete an excellent century, ably supported by Tom Sanders with 58. A total of 248/6 from the 40 overs would have been considered a decent total on the board. Tight lines and lengths were required and in the main delivered, however the Horncastle batters only had one way of thinking and that was hit out or get out. Unfortunately, as a whole the fielding let the team down as they chased down our total for the loss of 6 wickets with an over to spare. Something for the 2’s to focus on next week.
And finally, the Women’s 1st XI hosted Plumtree CC. Batting first Sleaford scored 152/4 from 35 overs with the main scorers being Evie Jarvis 22, Holly Vaughan 27* and Emily Hill 44. Aided by 47 extras and Plumtree only having 10 players. Plumtree got off to a fast start in pursuit of the runs, racing to 59/2 after 10 overs. Thereafter wickets fell in rapid succession as Plumtree were dismissed for 66 to give the home side a well-earned victory by 86 runs. A wicket apiece for Daisy Schofield, Evie Jarvis and Holly Vaughan with Tamsin Henry returning impressive figures of 2/3 and “best fielder in the club” Olivia Cepelak even more impressive figures of 2/0 in her solitary over before completing a run-out to seal the tie.

Junior Cricket
Sleaford U15s continued their impressive start to the league campaign with a 3rd consecutive victory vs Lindum Gladiators on a cold Monday evening at London Road. Having won the toss, Sleaford elected to bat on a dry well used wicket. Sleafords innings got off to a difficult start as in form openers George Hix (0) and Tom Sanders (5) were dismissed inside the first 4 overs. At 9 for 2, this brought Oliver Sneath and Dylan Chessum to the crease. Both batted watchfully against some excellent Lindum bowling as they steadily rebuilt the Sleaford innings. At the innings halfway point, the game was fascinatingly poised as Lindum’s bowlers had restricted Sleaford to 36 for 2 off 9 overs. However, with both batters now both set, they took the attack to Lindum’s bowlers accelerating the scoring rate until Dylan (32) and Oliver (31) both retired not out having built an excellent match winning 70 run partnership. Although no other batsman reached double figures, Sleafords lower order continued the positive batting before the innings closed on 101 for 7 from 18 overs. Feeling they were a little under par, Sleaford’s opening bowlers of Dylan Chessum (1/12) and the excellent Dan Adams, (2/1 from his 3 overs) set about their work and quickly put Sleaford on top, with Lindum struggling to keep up with the required run rate. Sleafords change bowlers continued the theme with Josh Nel (2/7), Harry Bailey (1/9), Charlie Foran (1/9), Freddie Foran (1/5) and Oliver Sneath (1-5) all sharing the wickets as Lindum’s innings closed on 77-9. A comfortable 24 run victory has the U15 team sitting top of the league but with a much stiffer test on the horizon away at a strong Woodhall Spa side on Monday 12th June. Sleaford will be looking for revenge having been knocked out of the county cup by Woodhall earlier in the season. Phil Sneath
